One – Children should drink tap water at a very young age, not bottled water.

Although many people may think that the cleaner, mineral-less bottled water is more healthy overall, the fact is that subjecting children to this an early age can actually speed up tooth decay. It so happens that the minerals and other materials that are in tap water form a sort of "vaccine" that can help protect young teeth from tooth decay later in life.

Many dentists today are actually recommending that parents keep children away from bottled water until they have developed their permanent set of teeth.

Two – Healthy foods can sometimes be as detrimental to teeth as sugary foods.

When it comes to tooth decay on teeth that are in the back of the mouth, just as many instances of active decay from eating too many fruits are found as decay from other types of sugar.

Dentists are starting to recommend that people who eat a great deal of fruit should perhaps switch to fruit juices instead of raw fruits. Many dentists are also recommending a mouthwash with a basic pH to counteract the acid from fruits. This mouthwash should be used immediately after eating any raw fruit, especially apples, oranges and lemons.

Three – Chewing gum is actually good for teeth.

Although many types of chewing gum contain sugar, the process of chewing creates more saliva in the mouth. Saliva is a natural cleaning agent of the mouth and counteracts many of the negative effects of sugar.

Many dentists are actually recommending that if you cannot brush her teeth immediately following a meal, chewing gum may actually be an alternative that is preferable to leaving the teeth alone.
